Then he ascended with me to the third heaven and Gabriel asked for it to be opened. He was asked, ‘Who is this?’ He replied, ‘Gabriel.’ He was asked, ‘Who is with you?’ He answered, ‘Muhammad (may Allah bless him and grant him peace).’ He was asked, ‘Has he been sent for?’ He answered, ‘Yes,’ and it was opened for us. I found Yusuf there (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), and saw that he had been given half of [all] beauty. He welcomed me and prayed for me. (Sahih Muslim).
Shaykh Salih al-Ja’fari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Yusuf (peace be upon him) was given half of beauty, and the women were tempted by his beauty. As for our Prophet, Allah gave him all of beauty, but women were not tempted by that. The reason is that Allah (most sublime) clothed the beauty of our master Muhammad with a majesty that would frighten the fiercest lions. Because of his lights, no one could look at him sharply. Al-Busiri (may Allah have mercy on him) said,
He is like the sun: to the eye it seems small from a distance,
and yet it dazzles the sight.
This is the meaning of the saying of Ibn al-Farid:
With beauty that You veiled with majesty,
he fell in love, and found sweetness in his torment
