On Mawlids

The mawlids of the Ahlul Bayt and the Awliya and the righteous and the pious scholars have a lofty status in our Islamic history. They are the days of celebration for the people of Allah who love the Friends of Allah….And above that they are a loud shout that reminds people of their Lord, and reminds them of their Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), and reminds them of Allah’s friends and beloveds who turned the universe into Mihrabs of remembrance and Minbars of da’wa. And in the repetition of these occasions is a repetition of this reminder, and {the reminder benefits the believers}.

They give a truthful expression of the status of Tasawwuf and its effect on believing hearts and souls that are at peace. In this is an indication of the great response that it receives, and the refuge that is sought in its inviolable fortress and lofty edifice. The masses seek refuge in it and find protection in it from materialistic, atheistic, and ideological currents and deviations that come in their way.

Imam Abu’l-Hasan al-Shadhili used to say to those who opposed him: “Between us and you are the Mawlids.”* And right he was!

And the Sufi Imam Sahl ibn Abdullah al-Tustari used to say: “Whoever wants to know the status of Tasawwuf, then let them look at the rank of its men in the hearts.” Allah has etched their love in the hearts of His servants who constantly remember Him, and made for their love a home in the hearts of the pious among His creation. There is a hadith in which the Lord of Majesty declares: ‘My Friends are those who are remembered when I am remembered, and I am remembered when they are remembered.’

This meeting and others like it, in the courtyards of the Ahlul Bayt and the righteous and the pious scholars, reveals the reality of Sufism, as it is represented in its greatest men and its poles. They are lanterns of guidance, and torches of light on the path of Iman and the call to Allah. Believing hearts gather around them with emotions of sincere love. In them we see the the effect of Allah upon His Friends, and the overflowing of Allah’s generosity upon His beloveds, and what the Awliya are given of karamaat (honorific miracles), blessings, gifts, and breezes that overflow unto them from the Divine Mercy: a pure gift for those who obeyed Allah and His Messenger and did good and said: I am from amongst the Muslims.

– From a Speech by Shaykh Abdul Ghani b. Salih al-Ja’fari on the Occasion of the Mawlid of Shaykh Salih al-Ja’fari (may Allah be pleased with them both)

* Meaning: When the Mawlids come, it becomes clear who is right and who is wrong among us. For in these blessed gatherings the status of Tasawwuf appears most clearly. And the status of the great figures and poles of Tasawwuf becomes clear in these great crowds that have come. Not with their tongue but with their actions and states they say: we have come to revive the memory of a man who loved Allah so Allah loved him. When Allah loved him, He made him accepted on the Earth, and the hearts united in loving him. They met to venerate him and show him respect, and they took it upon themselves to honor him. It is like the saying of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal: “Tell the people of innovation that between us and you are the funerals.” For likewise, in the funerals of the people of the Sunnah and the funerals of the people of innovation, the truth becomes manifest.
