Dr. Atiyya Mustafa was appointed by shaykh Abdul Ghani as the main authority in anything to do with the Ja’fari tariqa, so that the lovers and followers of shaykh Salih can turn to him when they had any questions. In short, Dr. Atiyya knew everyone and everything to do with shaykh Salih.
One day he was outside the Green Gate of the Masjid of Imam Husayn in Cairo, when he met an old shaykh. He talked to the shaykh and told him how he was a student of shaykh Salih. The old shaykh said to him: Do you know the story of why Radeena was written?
Dr. Atiyya said: I’m not aware of any story for it.
The old shaykh said to him: Shaykh Salih always wanted to be buried in al-Baqi near sayyidna Rasool Allah, salla Allahu alayhi wa alihi wa sallam. You see at the end of his poem al-Maqboola he says,
“Goodness we seek for our end,
to obtain our wish and desire
To be near your maqam,
in al-Baqi’, O Muhammad!”
One day, when the shaykh was telling the Prophet salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam of his desire to be buried near him, the Ahlul Bayt objected and said: “Oh Messenger of Allah, we want Shaykh Salih to remain here with us in Cairo.”
The Messenger salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam looked at shaykh Salih, to see what he will say in response to this.
Shaykh Salih realized that in accepting the wish of the Ahlul Bayt he would make their grandfather salla Allahu alayhi wa alihi wa sallam happy.
So he replied with the words,
“Radeena, ya Bani al-Zahraa, radeena!
Bihubbikumu lana dunya wa deena!”
We are most content and pleased, oh sons of al-Zahraa, most content and most pleased!
With your love for us in this world and the next!
And that is how Radeena came about.
Dr Atiyya says: There came a period of time, when every time I remembered my encounter with this shaykh, and the story he told me, I would be overcome with tears and cry.
Shaykh Salih would later change the second half to say,
“bihubbin feekumu yurdee nabeena!”
“With a love for you that pleases our Prophet.”
No wonder then, that when he began composing the rest of the poem, shaykh Salih saw sayyida Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her), giving him his authorisation for Hajj, so that at least he could go every year and visit Rasool Allah, salla Allahu alayhi wa alihi wa sallam!
May Allah send peace and blessings upon our beloved master Muhammad and his family and descendants, and upon our shaykh, the lover and beloved of the Ahlul Bayt, sayyidi Shaykh Salih al-Ja’fari al-Husayni.
